Georgia’s four protected areas: Mtirala and Kolkheti National Parks, Kintrishi and Kobuleti Protected areas have been granted UNESCO World Natural Heritage status.

“This is an important event not only for the country but also for the whole region,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili wrote on his Facebook page. “UNESCO World Heritage Sites are the most important part of the Caucasus Eco-Region and the Black Sea basin.
“Granting World Natural Heritage status to protected areas will help to increase awareness about Georgia, develop ecotourism, share international management experience, attract visitors and increase their number.”
Around the world, natural heritage status has been granted to just 213 sites, including the Amazon rainforest, the Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Mount Etna, and the Swiss Alps.
