Constitutional Court completes consideration of impeachment submission of President Zurabishvili

The consideration of the impeachment submission of the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has ended in the Constitutional Court.

The Chairman of the Constitutional Court, Merab Turava, said the conclusion of the plenary session of the court will be sent to the Parliament within the time frame established by the Constitution.

“It was not easy to conduct this process for three days, but we went through all the stages and, accordingly, we finished the review of the constitutional submission of “17 97″. Accordingly, the conclusion of the plenum of the Constitutional Court of Georgia will be sent and submitted to the Parliament of Georgia within the time frame established by the Constitution”, said Merab Turava.

The consideration of the impeachment submission of President Salome Zurabishvili started in the Constitutional Court of Georgia on October 3. The issue was discussed by the plenum of 9 judges of the Constitutional Court.

The President did not attend the proceedings. Lawyers Tamar Chugoshvili and Maia Kopaleishvili defended her interests in the court.

Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze and other members of the ruling party: Anri Okhanashvili, Giorgi Kakhiani and Tengiz Sharmanashvili attended the session as the authors of the submission.

The basis for initiating the impeachment process against Zurabishvili by the ruling team became the foreign visits made by her, to which the government had not given consent. The issue of impeachment of the President was decided at the meeting of the political council of the Georgian Dream party on September 1. The Constitutional Court has a one-month deadline to prepare its opinion. In case of a positive decision by the court, 100 deputies’ votes are needed to dismiss the President, which the majority of Georgian Dream does not have.
