The European Union may impose large fines on shipping companies for water pollution by container cargo.
Under today’s legislation, even if a container is lost at sea, companies are not at risk, as such an incident is considered an accident. They pay fines only in case of spillage of dangerous substances.
Under the new obligation, shipping companies will be held responsible for polluting the environment with, for example, plastic products or other small items.
