Natia Mezvrishvili: Today, Compromise Most Important To Achieve EU Membership Candidate Status

“The current political process forces political parties to make pragmatic steps and ensure there is a compromise – to reduce polarization in the country and implement reforms needed to obtain the EU membership candidate status,” Natia Mezvrishvili, Deputy Chairman of the party ‘For Georgia,’ stated at a briefing.

She noted that today, the compromise is the most important to achieve the ultimate goal – obtain EU membership candidate status.

“This is the goal of thousands of our citizens protesting on Rustaveli Avenue. We would like to thank those people, everyone (including organizers), who supported the expression of the will of our citizens. Now it is the responsibility of politicians to bring the will of the Georgian people to reality. There is no time to wait. We must show the world that we can compromise and stand together.

“Of course, the ultimate responsibility is on the government! Despite the fact that trust towards the ruling party is minimal, compromise is the step to be taken by all responsible political parties. That is our statement, the statement of the political party, which has never been the source of polarization. On the contrary, we used all available resources in municipal Sakrebulos, to shift the attention of political parties from polarization towards the interests of citizens.

“There will be no compromise on denial to implement conditions set by the EU! We should remember that along with depolarization, all other conditions should be met to obtain the EU membership candidate status. These require compromises from the Government, at first! Depolarization can be achieved by real steps, not a creation of different formats. Therefore, we will participate in every process, which serves the ultimate goal to fulfil the conditions set by the EU and thus preserve Georgia’s EU integration perspective. We were the first political party, which emerged with the initiative of unity around the idea of EU integration on the day when Georgia first applied for membership. We were the first political party, which on June 17, as the EU decision was published, presented a specific plan to the public, which is oriented at the implementation of the EU conditions.

“Unfortunately, we have not heard back from Georgian Dream (GD), while part of the opposition joined the request on technical government. This is not important anymore. It is our political responsibility to participate in every process on behalf of our citizens and support the EU perspectives of Georgia.

“Accordingly, despite the fact that the margins of the formats announced by GD and their real goals are yet unknown, we stand ready to participate in the process to use even the small chance to achieve the ultimate goal for our country and our citizens and at the same time, prevent the Government from using these formats only to keep power. We will participate in every process (regardless of who is the initiator of the process) which will lead us to de-oligarchization and demolition of unlawfully consolidated power. At the same time, as the trust toward GD is minimal, it is important to engage international partners and the President of Georgia in the process,” Natia Mezvrishvili stated.
