For Georgia: Policy of ‘Dream’ leads to severing strategic partnership with US, subversion of EU integration

“The recent bipartisan letter of the US Senators and the European Parliament resolution regarding Russian law clearly demonstrate that the policy of the Georgian Government, which it has been pursuing for the last three years, leads to severing strategic partnership with the United States and subversion of the EU integration process,” states For Georgia party, led by former PM Giorgi Gakharia.

The party members claim that the Georgian Dream, serving the strategic goal of Russia, isolates Georgia from its friends, hinders its development, introduces Russian style authoritarianism and provokes civic confrontation.

“Georgian Dream declares the friends of Georgia – the defenders of Country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence – enemies, thereby openly violating the Constitution, opposing the will of the Georgian people to become a fully-fledged member of the European family and returning Georgia to the Russian orbit.
We appeal to the Ruling Party to withdraw the law, return to the Constitutional framework, hold free and fair elections and bring the Country back to normal, democratic development,” reads the statement.

A bipartisan group of the United States Senate sent a letter to the Prime Minister of Georgia on April 26, expressing deep concern and warning the Prime Minister that if the foreign agents bill becomes law, they will be forced to encourage a change in US policy towards Georgia, – Georgian Service of Voice of America reports.

According to the Voice of America, “the unprecedented note of concern sent by 14 Senators to Irakli Kobakhidze is the most severe among other statements of the Senate.”

The bipartisan letter was led by Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Senator James Risch.

“They are calling on the government of Georgia to withdraw the law, which threatens US-Georgia relations and also raises the possibility of imposing sanctions on individuals, cutting off direct government funding and expanding visa restrictions.

According to the copy of the letter obtained by Voice of America, the senators will encourage Washington to change its policy towards Georgia, in case the law is enacted,” reads the article.
